Plunder Riches, Slay Dragons! Old-School Hexcrawl and Survival

Low Fantasy Gaming | Campaign

About the adventure

💥 Loot dungeons & get rich! Fighting monsters is completely optional. 💥 Stop an ancient curse from destroying the civilized world... again! 💥 Experience an epic tale of valiant heroism and underhanded skullduggery in the vein of Black Company and Lankhmar stories! It begins almost routinely: you’re hired to find a missing lord who ended up slumming it a touch too hard. Crawling pubs instead of dungeons? Easy money, right? Wrong. Soon there’s a cult trying to summon a demon apocalypse, elves returning to the world after a thousand-year hibernation, and the mystical Veil breaking under the strain of a god that was exiled aeons ago. Oh, and did I mention the dragons? What begins as a story of expendable assets working for a mysterious and enigmatic employer in Crow's Keep soon turns into a great hunt for an elusive maleficar all over Midlands... ------- Midlands of Argosa is a points-of-light setting in the vein of the fantasy of yesteryear, building upon the classic elements of the genre. The wilderness is infested with deadly Skorn and terrifying monstrosities, walled cities are the only safe places, and there are cults, demons, mutants and godlings galore. It takes a strong arm and a valiant heart to brave the borderlands, but even the cities aren't safe. Political intrigues of the Crow's Keep nobles, watching the dying King like vultures; haughty and decadent merchant princes stabbing each other in the back in the underground Dol-Karok; gang warfare in Port Brax and the insance science of Northgate - all of these paint a colorful tapestry that is Argosa. Step into the Midlands, adventurer - and may the gods judge you fairly.

Recruiting notes

Ever wanted to play D&D, but 5e is just too high-powered? Thirsting for good old plundering of riches? Want some awesome main plot to go with your old-school dungeon crawling? Look no further. Tales of Argosa is what happens when you take the best parts of various d20-based systems, add a good measure of randomness and a gritty setting, and et voila!

Great DM! Balances rules with telling a great story effortlessly letting you be clever but also maintaining real stakes for your character. As a terminal character tweaker also very willing to let you make reasonable changes to bring your character to life while maintaining balance. Also really impressed by willingness to allow social and mental solutions to combats. Highly recommend!

Awesome impromptu GM. Sergey is very quick witted to come up with on the spot thematic and meaningful descriptions for critical successes or failures. Very immersive story telling.

Sergey is a fantastic dm which will work with you to come up with a fun and interesting story for your character, present a interesting world to explore, and NPCs to both enjoy and hate.

Works with players in order to make it easy for them to express their characters as they wish, writes interesting characters, sets up fun challenges for players in and out of combat, has great visual aids for places, people and adversaries but most importantly he has seemingly unlimited patience and counter plans for all the dastardly things we players try to get away with. 9.5/10 as a gm. Would have given a 10 but he doesn't send us nearly enough pictures of his cats.

Sergey did a great job running a Warhammer: Wrath and Glory oneshot for my brothers as a birthday event. He helped with character building, explained the mechanics once we started and (I suspect0 bent the rules perfectly to give us the adventure that we wanted.

Additional details

How to prepare

The only things you will require are: - Discord account - Forge account (free for the user) - Decent microphone & some relatively quiet space for 3 hours a week. Webcams are completely optional, and we mostly run without them. Other than that - bring your best Conan, Fafhrd & Grey Mouser and other epic scoundrel vibes, and be ready for a rough, dangerous and thrilling adventure!

What I provide

What I provide: - Maps, scenes and visual aids. - VTT assistance & troubleshooting as needed. - (Somewhat) funny voices. - Personalized storylines for characters woven into the fabric of the campaign. I prefer stories to games. I lean heavily into personalized storylines, making them central to the campaign. After all, it is the story about your characters, and they should be absolutely central to it. Handwaving a rule here or there in favor of a particularly cool moment is also something that is known to happen! The most important question at my tables usually isn't the "Are the characters going to win or lose?", but rather "What will their victory cost them, and what will be left of them in the end?" That doesn't mean your characters will be immortal or have it easy! Argosa is dangerous, and so is this campaign too. :)

Gameplay details

Argosa is a harsh world, and many adventures deal with topics such as slavery, blood rituals and eldritch horrors from beyond the Veil. Come prepared. - Lines & Veils are established in Session 0 and strictly adhered to. - I usually do not delve too much into gory details. - Sexual content might be hinted at/alluded to, but is never on-screen or explicit.

How will character creation work

Character creation in Argosa is quick and easy: roll 3d6 down the line, roll for your origins and class, and you can even roll for backgrounds and lifepaths! - Extra equipment and starting gold bonuses are available for those who embrace the random chaos of the dice and generate completely randomized characters in the vein of Old-School Renaissance! - Alternatively, you can build the character by hand, picking options instead of rolling... but where is the fun in that? :) That said, character creation will be done together with the players during session 0. We will go through every step of the process, taking a look at all the mechanical and role-playing features, and will also establish the initial party bonds that brought these disparate heroes together.
