Gygaxian Nightmares | Pathfinder 1e Homebrew

Pathfinder 1e | Campaign

About the adventure

Unlikely Allies will have players leveling up at milestones (story beats and quest endings). There will be a main questline to tackle at your leisure with room for encounters along the way. I'll tailor the main quest and primary themes to the characters you make. Want to be knights on a holy quest? You got it. Want to be Robin Hood and his band of merry men? By all means. Want to be a group of necromancers and cutthroats? Who am I to stop you, lets set up the targets and start the shooting gallery. I have lots of stories in my back pocket, so just be yourself and we can work something out. Ideally, I invite you to just make a high-fantasy adventurer that speaks to you and we'll see how they roll with your new unlikely allies. I would prefer to make the setting we play in together, collaboratively, but that's not required at all. The setting choice is totally negotiable. I have a home brewed setting pre-generated, I have experience in Golarion, and I'm not opposed to utilizing D&D content on a whim from time to time or to just use as the backdrop for your shenanigans.

Recruiting notes

As the name implies, this will be a bit more of a "Gygaxian" experience. I'm looking for players who want to fight things, players who want to maximize their strategic advantage numerically, and players who are interested primarily in the dungeon crawling experience. There will be some dramatic role play, and there will always be time for jokes and silly voices, but this group will be oriented primarily toward the tabletop experience and feature more heavily the dangers of adventuring than the dramas. You will be level 1, you will level up quickly at first and more slowly later, and you will advance at story appropriate moments. I'm looking for players who like Pathfinder 1st Edition, players interested in learning Pathfinder 1st Edition, and players looking to play creative and interesting characters. I have pre-generated characters, I'll help you make one, or you can present a 25 point-buy character for approval. This game will use 3rd party content on a case by case basis, the Elephant in the Room Feat Changes, and additional character advancement rulesets such as Corruption and Mythic Ranks. You are not expected to understand these rulesets, message the DM for more information.

Having played Pathfinder with Moldorga as my GM several times, and knowing their background in game design, I'd say there are few who could do better. The guy's passionate about what he does and always puts in the extra effort for his players, he rewards creative problem solving and uses his expertise and professionalism to maintain a consistent and rewarding experience for his players. If you want a reliable GM with a flair for the theatric, look no further.

Moldorga is a collaborative world builder with a great sense of storytelling and excellent imrov skills. I am part of a weekly game they have GMed for over a year. It began with a generative worldbuilding system in which the players co-wrote elements of the setting to fit the characters we planned to play and the enemies we hoped to face. Character creation emphasized player creativity so that we all had characters we'd be interested in playing long-term. Moldorga is a master of coming to game with half a plan and using improv to fill in the blanks so that players end session feeling fulfilled in their plans but challenged in their execution.

GM created a fun filled adventure that the players were allowed to liberally influence, or meticulously navigate as they saw fit. Very forgiving for players learning mechanics. Would gladly play with this DM again!

How to prepare

A mic (for use on Discord, for which you will need an account) and a computer (for use on Roll20, for which you will need an account) are the only things you will need to participate. Roll20 has character sheets, battle maps, and does as much math for you as it can. Plus, I'll be able to use the site to look at and manage your sheet if you need help or a pre-generated character. I know the rules well enough to resolve most confusions, but there are resources I can connect you to that can help you find information at your leisure. I can create a character for you, help you make one, or review one that you have made yourself.

What I provide

I am working on utilizing ambient music, voice changers, and other effects to enhance the experience at key moments. I encourage creativity in character creation. To encourage that creativity mechanically, I allow 3rd party content on a case by case basis. I allow rolling for stats as well as point buy. I encourage players to work together and plan logistically as a team around what rolls they are trying to fill, but I will balance for party composition accordingly, so don't feel like there, "needs to be a healer/tank." I will lean into whatever gameplay styles people ask for, combat, roleplay, or puzzles. I'll likely throw you a jolly mix of all three from time to time, but I will create whatever players find most fun. I have a fondness for the Elephant in the Room Feat Changes that are often popular among Pathfinder veterans. This is a list of mechanical changes to the baseline Pathfinder system that make it easier to specialize in whatever you want to do.

Gameplay details

I like to have at least one ten minute break during my games, sometimes two. I like to do a short debrief at the end of a session to go over anything the players would like to comment on or address, and I welcome debrief comments during breaks. Session zero will involve setting up the lines and veils that shall be abided by. If at any time there is content present that crosses a line or veil, or if something has recently become uncomfortable in any way, shoot me a message or make a public inquiry and it will be discussed on the spot. I'm always looking to be a better story teller so please just tell me what you think when you think it and I will work on incorporating your ideas into our collaborative time together. If there are any safety tools you would like me to incorporate, let me know and we'll work together on that.

How will character creation work

Players will make a level 1 character, this character can be rolled by the dungeon master, rolled in Roll20, or created using 20 point buy. Since I allow 3rd party content on a case by case basis, anything that is not 3rd party is ok for selection, and anything else will require you to ask directly. I'll allow you to use whatever method you would like to submit a concept to me, but everyone needs to have entered their information into their Roll20 character sheet by the time session one commences.
