Aether & Steam - A Steampunk adventure in the Elemental Planes

Aether & Steam - A Steampunk adventure in the Elemental Planes

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Welcome to the Melifair Coast! "Aether & Steam" is an adventure that is part of the "Lands of Inaelia" series with themes of Cosmic Horror and Steampunk. Over the last 20 years, the Melifair Coast has seen one of the largest industrial revolutions ever seen on the continent. Every advancement and invention has been made possible by the recent unearthing of a massive mechanical vault. Excavators found dozens of inert automatons stored within, as well as a plethora of old technology. Its purpose is unknown, but engineers did learn how to reactivate these automatons, who awoke with no memory of the world before the vault. Only that they are the 'Warforged'. With their help, the people of the Melifair Coast have made many advancements such as firearms, aether-powered generators, railways, and even airships. The capital city of New Albion acts as the seat of power for all of the Melifair Coast. The houses of Parliament oversee the distribution of resources, decide over laws, and see to the defense of the country with the help of their former ruler, the Grand Duke Kamarir Cardinal. However, the gangs run the streets of the city. Various factions control each of New Albion's districts with an iron fist. How that affects your time here depends on you.

Game style

Rules as Written (RaW)

Games that are ran “Rules as Written” emphasize realism and stick to the letter of the rules, allowing players to explore creative solutions while still operating under a consistent rule set. Players have the ability to utilize the rules in creative ways to create awesome characters and moments in the game.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Dungeon Crawl

A “Dungeon Crawl” is a scenario where players navigate a dungeon or labyrinth-like environment for the entirety of the adventure. It emphasizes battling monsters, collecting loot, and avoiding traps to survive to the end!

Scott runs an absolutely amazing game. The world he has created is incredibly rich and full of life while the stories he tells fully immerse you into it. Our game has heavy roleplay where the players are allowed to express their characters how they desire and in doing so direct the story in whatever direction that takes us. Combat is challenging and interesting/varied. I would recommend Scott to anyone and everyone.

Scott was awesome. He knew exactly when to offer guidance and when to let us figure things out. The story was engaging and spooky.

Playing with Scott is some of the most fun I've had playing DND. Time also feels like it flying by. Scott's voice lend itself very well to dramatic moments and he sets the mood with effects, music, and maps so well. He gives all players a time to shine and place in the world, and allows to alot of creativity when it comes to the players. He is an amazing DM, and I would highly, HIGHLY recommend him.

TLDR: I can't necessarily describe a great DM (but I'll try), but I know one when I see one. This is a great DM. Player view: He adjusted to the audience given him and allowed for each player to have their moment in the one-shot I attended. Superior RP and plot line to follow. Gave enough clues to the mystery without handing it to us (see: adjusting to audience). Well developed towns and world maps to provide a full, open-world experience. What makes it interesting is that he works ad-hoc inventions that are "on the fly" decisions into the greater vision, allowing for players to use unique combinations that aren't simply "YouTube inventions" (my term, not his). DM Perspective as a player: I'm pretty much a forever DM, and from my experience there are 3 things: Rules (when rule of cool is invoked, he does it with purpose), Tools (utilizes VTT, Discord and Music to full effect) and Story (full RP with planned ad hoc narration). It's difficult to find a DM that has a a mastery of all 3. This guy is a triple threat, with a mastery of all 3.

Scott combines the attributes that I find most important in a DM. He deftly employs visuals, a spellbinding voice, and scene-setting narrative flourishes to heighten the dramatic tension, and yet his support for the players and eagerness to see them have a fantastic time is never in doubt. For example, while a more heavy-handed DM might emphasize Strahd's strength as he arrived to interrupt our battle, Scott instead described Strahd casually pausing to toy with the wax of a candle in a way that sent chills down my spine. Scott is constantly working to improve his craft so that we will have the very best experience possible and always seems well prepared for our sessions. He does use some house rules, but he lets the party decide whether or not to employ them. I've found him to be patient, supportive, and responsive. I'm having such a BLAST that I'm already wondering what other adventures he may offer.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every game I have played with Scott as my DM. The visuals that he provides both through foundry and story telling balance so well. The encounters are fun and well balanced as well. Recently I have been thinking about our session all week long and I can honestly say this is the most I've ever been mentally drawn into a campaign.

Additional details

How to prepare

A working mic is a requirement, but a camera is optional. Players will need a Discord account and an account on forge-vtt.com. Both of which are completely free. Other than that, I recommend finding some good character art for your token.

What I provide

Maps, music, a hosted Foundry server (Forge), tokens, a dedicated Discord server, and of course, the game!

Gameplay details

This game contains themes of cosmic horror and veiled mentions of drug use. An X-card system will be in place for players to use if the content portrayed becomes triggering or overwhelming. I would also like to speak with players individually about any possible themes or triggers they may have so as to avoid inadvertently causing further problems. There will be a number of house rules used to provide some flexibility for players. These will be discussed before we begin so players will be aware, and have a chance to decide on which rules are used, and which are not. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly game, and I have a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech of any kind. Whether that be against gender, sexual orientation, race, nationality, and/or creed. Nor will sexual assault be tolerated, whether simulated or as a joke. I want everyone who comes to my table to feel welcomed and safe. Communication is important, and you are always welcome to message me with any questions you may have or to bring up any concerns about the details of the campaign. If something makes you uncomfortable, please signal me right away and we will either retcon, skip, and/or avoid the issue. What players can expect: -Diverse setting to allow a large number of races, classes, and backstories to find origins within. -Homebrewed pantheon with a few 'lesser deities' pulled from other sources. -A number of branching story arcs spanning the Material Plane and the Elemental Planes. -A dynamic style that encourages collaborative story-telling in a mostly sandbox country. -Lots of custom, detailed maps made by me for nearly every locale. -Legendary items for those clever enough to find them. -Combat encounters occasionally above your weight class. -Monster carving, allowing you to create/commission useful items made from leftover monster parts. -Cursed items. The effects of which you won't learn until you attune/use them.

How will character creation work

Players will create characters starting at level 1 and use the 27-point buy system for stats. As we will be using Foundry VTT, players can either create their characters using assigned sheets, or they can create their characters in D&DBeyond before having them imported into the game. As a house rule, players will be granted a free feat at level 1. If anyone is unfamiliar with Foundry or DDB, I will be more than happy to walk you through it and help you to understand how it works.
