Good Society: Regency Intrigue and Collaborative Storytelling
Good Society | Campaign
About the adventure
Step into the Regency era, a world inspired by the works of Jane Austen, where the stakes of everyday life are nothing short of monumental. In this narrative-rich game, you’ll navigate the intricate social dynamics of the early 19th-century English countryside. Will your character ascend to the esteemed position of Lord or Lady of Habershire Manor, or will their ambitions lead to destitution? Good Society is a collaborative storytelling game that focuses on character desires, relationships, and societal roles. Players work together to create a dramatic and often conflicting narrative, fueled by their characters' motivations and goals. The game includes Resolve Tokens, which allow players to influence the story by introducing plot twists or bending events to their will, and Monologue Tokens, which spotlight inner thoughts to add depth and drama. Collaboration is at the heart of the game, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s all harmonious. With PvP elements and conflicted motivations, characters may find themselves at odds in their pursuit of personal happiness and social standing. Whether scheming in the drawing room or brooding over a secret affair, your choices shape not only your destiny but also the world around you. Expect rich storytelling, character-driven drama, and journaling mechanics to chronicle your exploits. Together, we’ll craft a tale worthy of Austen herself, with all the wit, romance, and intrigue of her timeless novels. Experience a game where your words carry the weight of fortune, reputation, and love—this is Good Society.

Gameplay details
This game is very cognizant of the need for player consent over the pressures that their character will face. You can find an excerpt from the game manual below. Additionally, my policies as a GM and a form for player Lines and Veils will be linked when you join this game. AS A PLAYER, YOU WILL: Respect the decisions made in Collaboration. Take action to pursue your character's desires and objectives. Be willing to accept (or even orchestrate) your character's own misfortunes to create a more interesting story. Contribute to the story and support other players even when your character is not involved. WHY MUST I SUFFER? In Austen's novels, characters suffer setbacks, misfortunes, and uncertainty before they can achieve their objectives. These setbacks are often what makes the story interesting! The same principle applies to the story you are creating in Good Society. Let bad things happen to your character—you can reverse their fortunes later, and it will be a thing far sweeter.

How will character creation work
Start Thinking About Your Character Players can use the excerpt from the rules below to begin imagining their characters. When you join the game, you’ll receive links to premade character roles to choose from, or you can create your own using the available materials. We’ll use the cards to decide each character's desires and starting relationships, ensuring an engaging and dynamic setup. CHARACTER ROLE In the ever-watchful, gossip-driven society of Habershire, your character’s role defines their place in the community and the consequences of their reputation. From the Socialite to the Heir, each role is unique, and only one of each can exist in the game at a time. Every person is defined not only by who they are but by who they’re not. Your Character Role Will Include: Basics: Information such as your character’s name, age, appearance, and temperament. These should capture your character at a glance. For example, their appearance may be elegant, sickly, or gaudy, while their temperament might be shy, excitable, or pompous. Role Attributes: Inspired by the hallmarks of Austen’s characters, these attributes provide creative ideas and guidance for fleshing out your character. Inner Conflict: The central struggle your character faces, such as a conflict between love and duty or acceptance and revenge. This dynamic will evolve as the story progresses. Reputation Conditions: Society's judgment is unavoidable. Your character’s reputation will rise or fall through reputation tags, which describe how society views them. Positive tags might include caring or dutiful, while negative tags could be dishonest or petty. Accumulating similar tags may trigger specific conditions outlined in your character role sheet. FAMILY BACKGROUND In Regency society, a person’s family defines much of their standing and reputation. Each character will have a family background, such as Peerage or Humble Origins, which influences their starting reputation and unique criteria for rising or falling in society’s estimation. Key Elements of Family Background: Background Description: A brief overview of the family’s social standing and heritage. Initial Reputation: Positive and negative reputation tags associated with your character’s background. Reputation Criteria: Specific conditions that determine whether your character’s reputation rises or falls, evaluated during the reputation phase. While multiple characters can share the same family background, related characters (e.g., siblings or parent and child) should decide whether to share a background or craft a narrative reason for differences. When you join, these details will serve as a starting point to create rich, complex characters who are ready to navigate the trials and tribulations of Regency-era life. Let society watch and judge, for the stakes are high, and every action shapes your legacy!
