A Dream of Peaceful Slumber|🏳️🌈 & Beginner Friendly
Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign
About the adventure
In this campaign, you are part of a coven of witches; powerful, mistrusted, and begrudgingly necessary. A darkness has fallen over the land you call home. The sun does not rise above the horizon, people's dreams are tormented by visions of their past and future, and the shadow has awoken horrors that lurk in its embrace. The Sleepless Night has come. This campaign will focus on your coven as you seek to learn why the Sleepless Night has come to your community. Your characters will battle dark forces and nightmarish horrors, struggle against a community that mistrusts you, and search for answers within the ever looming darkness. Will you fight against the darkness or embrace it? Save the people who have shunned you or leave them to suffer their fate? Your world will be coloured in shades of grey, where there are no simple answers and everything has its cost. No experience needed—just bring your curiosity and imagination.
Game style
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
Combat Heavy
“Combat Heavy” games emphasize the combat mechanics within their systems over roleplay or puzzle solving. There are frequent and longer battles with enemies and a greater emphasis on tactical game play.
Roleplay Heavy
“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

I’m proud to say I’ve had the privilege of being a player in many campaigns and one-shots that Josh has GM’d. Each story is carefully woven with the players, and Josh always creates a world where the narrative feels as much our own as it is his. He is a GM who truly understands that TTRPGs are a collaborative storytelling experience. I’ve never felt like a passive participant! My character, and the characters of my fellow players, were always treated with care and attention. Josh is as invested in our characters as we are. Josh has an incredible ability to make everyone at the table feel included and encouraged to bring their own unique style into the game. His worlds are not only creatively designed but also wonderfully described. Even campaigns from six years ago still linger in my mind, from the names of places to the unique physiological traits of the characters and details in worldbuilding I haven’t encountered anywhere else. I’ve played in everything from beginner campaigns to high level ones with Josh. He has an amazing knack for making new players feel comfortable and immersed in the game, and I’ve seen friends who were new to TTRPGs quickly find their stride thanks to the inclusive, welcoming environment Josh fosters. I truly can’t recommend him enough! Whether you're new to TTRPGs or an experienced player, Josh creates experiences that will stay with you for years.
Josh is a master of the 'Rule of Cool'. Not only that but it's really clear to me he puts a lot of thought into making sure everyone's characters felt unique and important. He is incredibly invested in everyone's backstories, weaving them into the narrative in really interesting ways. If you're looking for a DM who cares about you not only as a person but as a player then you're in the right place!
I would 100% recommend Josh as your next GM. I always look forward to our next sessions as I can never predict what's to come! It's so clear the time and effort they put into creating the story and I'm always grateful to have a fully fleshed out world to explore. They make it so fun to role play and I look forward to those moments in every session. It's so easy to get lost in the story and immerse myself in the game. Their enthusiasm and commitment makes every game really special. I can’t say enough about how great it's been to have Josh as a GM!
Josh is one of the most fun, off the wall but somehow also deceptively well thought out storytellers I've ever played with. He never sets up a situation and expects his players to follow his plan, instead he crafts deep, complex stories and then lets them try any insane idea that comes into their heads to run through them. He's an expert at setting up a scene and putting the power in his players' hands to explore it however they want, making sure they always get to feel like the main characters of these incredible stories. He always makes sure everyone at his table is heard, everyone's story and voice matter and are given equal weight. He's willing to let you goof around at times but is equally capable of utterly terrifying you the next moment or pushing you to think strategically as he puts your back to the wall in an intense and cinematic combat. Josh's biggest talent is in setting up mysteries and guiding you through them without handholding, instead I'm always blown away when we put together the pieces he sprinkles throughout his stories. I've had the privilege of playing two of his campaigns along with numerous oneshots across various systems and am always giddy with excitement to see what this mad scientist has cooked up next.

How to prepare
A character concept and backstory (These should be open to adjustment to suit the group's needs and goals). A Roll20 account. A Discord account. A microphone for voice chat on Discord. A webcam for video on Discord.
What I provide
A Discord server will be provided to players that sign up for this campaign. The server will have resources to help you with character creation. A Roll20 game will be set up for the campaign. This virtual tabletop will be home to player's character sheets, battle maps, custom tokens and handouts. As a DM, I like to focus on a cinematic style experience, making use of art for NPCs, locations and items, and music. I use Kenku FM for my music and ambient sounds, which is a Discord bot that allows players to alter the volume of tracks, so if music is something you find distracting, you are free and welcome to turn it down or mute it entirely. I like a mixture of complex character narratives and good Ol' fashion fighting bad guys. Sessions will be a mixture of roleplay heavy scenes and cinematic tactical combat. Depending on the session, your character might find themselves in multiple combats in the one session or spending an entire session roleplaying with other players and NPCs. When it comes to character voices I'm no voice actor, but what I lack in unique voices I make up for with descriptions of NPC mannerisms and art to immerse my players. I strongly believe that role-playing games are where we come together to have fun, and I aim always to allow my players to use their creativity and imaginations to overcome the challenges they face. While the rules of a system do matter and I enjoy the more mechanical elements of TTRPGs, I believe in bending said rules in the service of the story and our groups enjoyment of the game.
Gameplay details
I will cover our games safety tools in our session 0. Players are encouraged to message me during or after game sessions to discuss any content they do not enjoy, so we can ensure you feel safe at our game table. Monte Cook RPG Consent Checklist will be kept in an anonymous document that will be available to all players online. This will allow all players and the DM to see what type of content will and will not be present in our game sessions. Stars and Wishes will be collected at the end of each session. These will be used to tailor future sessions to focus on the content the players enjoy and want to see more of.

How will character creation work
Players are encouraged to message me about character ideas before our group's session 0. We can spit ball ideas and discuss what type of character you hope to play. During session 0, we will discuss our group's characters and how they came together to form their coven. Player's should come to the session 0 with a character concept and be open to making changes based on the group's needs and goals. Any players that join after will be guided through the existing groups characters and together we can find a way of incorporating your character into the group's story. Players can bring any homebrew/custom content they are interested in using. I am happy to say yes and/or make tweaks to whatever you bring me. Characters will begin at level 1. Characters will use either of these standard arrays for character stats: 14 (+2), 14 (+2), 14 (+2), 12 (+1), 12 (+1), 8 (-1) OR 14 (+2), 14 (+2), 14 (+2), 12 (+1), 10 (+0), 10 (+0).
