Desolation of the Nag Lord: A Dolmenwood Adventure

Desolation of the Nag Lord: A Dolmenwood Adventure

Old-School Essentials, Welcome to Dolmenwood | Campaign

About the adventure

Dolmenwood encompasses a swathe of tangled woods, fungus-encrusted glades, and foetid marsh on the wild borders of civilisation. In this beguiling realm, the magical and otherworldly are always close at hand. Standing stones loom in hallowed glades, graven with sigils of deep magic. Ley lines pulse within the earth, their potent arcane energy tapped by greedy sorcerers. Secret doorways allow passage to perilous fairy roads, for those charmed or blessed by the lords of Elfland. In an ancient cave, a derelict kingdom of giants was discovered. After awakening from an enchanted petrification, the crowned prince of the giants has informed the Courts of Dolmenwood that a terrible enemy--the Nag-Lord--may have finally harnessed the power to break into Dolmenwood from beyond the known realms of existence. Therefore, a party of astute adventurers will be dispatched to investigate these claims within the brambles and moors of Dolmenwood...

Game style

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Party notes

We're a fairly diverse party. Human knight, human hunter, human friar, breggle hunter, grimalkin enchanter.

I have played a few sessions with Cowyn now and have enjoyed them all. I find myself looking forward to the next session to find out what is in store for our characters.

Colwyn is conscientious and puts a great deal of effort and research into running his games. He has a wealth of experience in a variety of RPGs that I think gives him a broad perspective on how to handle almost any situation that players may throw at him.

Played 2 sessions

Three of us played a two-session introductory game with Colwyn, and all three of us loved it. He was very patient and supportive in a way that gave those of us who were new to online D&D plenty of chances to shine. On top of that, his detailed homebrew was full of creative quirks that led to some gut-busting humorous moments -- and even a scare or two. I definitely recommend the experience!

Colwyn is a great GM who gives his players the ability to create great stories, allows for a ton of player creativity, and is very kind in his interactions with others. He is very patient when I have any questions, and I feel like he genuinely cares about his players. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a GM who actually cares.

Additional details

How to prepare

I may need to supply books and sheets to players. A working mic will be required. A working camera will be requested, but not required. A Roll20 account is required. A Discord account is required.

What I provide

I will supply everything for the players, except dice! We will use Discord to communicate. Roll20 will be used for maps, visual aids, etc. Also, when appropriate, ambient sounds and/or music will be used through Roll20. I am hoping to stream/record this game, but only if EVERYONE agrees. I emphasize roleplay and story most in my games, so occasionally I will use special voices for certain characters to give them extra flare. This is a fairy tale themed game, and I want it to flow like one.

Gameplay details

This game utilizes the Old School Essentials system, which harkens back to classic D&D gameplay style. Combat will likely be quicker, and potentially more lethal to characters. It is an incredibly rich setting, ripe for exceptional roleplaying and storytelling. It is inspired by the fairy tales and mythos of the British Isles. Characters will start at level 5, and the campaign will begin in the city of Prigwort. Prigwort is a famed brewing and market town at the heart of the mystical Dolmenwood. Therefore, Breggles, Mosslings, and even some Demi-Fey are commonplace amongst its populace. There aren't Roll20 character sheets for Dolmenwood currently available. But I have them in PDF for players to use. I will supply all necessary content and tools for character creation once players are in the Discord server.

We will create or adjust characters in Session 0, or 1 on 1 with the Referee (that's me) prior to Session 1. Level 5 characters. I would LOVE to stream/record this game! BUT only if EVERYONE agrees. If agreed, face cams WILL NOT be required, but requested. A picture of your character will be placed instead. A working mic WILL be required!
