Riddle of the Mists | A Curse of Strahd Adventure
Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign
About the adventure
The lands of Barovia harbor a dark secret that has haunted them for centuries. Trapped in a land surrounded by a deadly mist, worthy adventurers must solve the riddle of what has brought them to this sunless valley. At every turn they must find the hidden answers to their ever-growing list of questions about how they get home. At the heart of everything is a dark entity that seems to control everything. It is by their will, and their will alone, that the mists have turned this lonely valley into a prison for all who dare find themselves imprisoned here. None may leave the valley of Barovia except by the will of this entity, not even the souls of the dead are allowed to leave. Are you brave enough to endeavor to solve the riddle of the mists? Are you courageous enough to battle the ever-present evils of this land? Are you wise enough to outsmart the many creatures and villains who fight, even amongst themselves, for ultimate control of the lands of Barovia? Are you the Heroic Adventurers who can put a final end to the Curse of the dreaded Count Strahd von Zarovich? The Riddle of the Mists is a dark gothic horror fantasy game that features an assortment of classic horror genre creatures such as hags, werewolves, ghosts, demons, vampires, and many more. Each campaign length game will be customized for the players in that campaign; new players will experience a game that fosters learning their character's abilities and how to play the game while also enjoying a dark fantasy story, whereas veteran players will experience a game that will test both the player and their character through challenging combat, roleplay scenarios, and a land that is always trying to kill them.
Game style
Theater of the Mind
“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.
Additional details
How to prepare
All players will need a webcam and either a built in microphone (usually in the webcam) or an external headset and microphone so that they will be able to communicate with other players and the GM during game play. Players will need to have either a free or paid account to the following websites: 1) D&D Beyond (campaign link provided before Session Zero), 2) Roll20 (campaign link provided before Session Zero), 3) Discord (link to Discord provided before Session Zero). While it is not required, installing the Beyond20 internet browser extension allows rolls made in D&D Beyond to be automatically delivered to the chat area of Roll20.
What I provide
As the Game Master, I will provide a D&D Beyond campaign where players may create their characters utilizing all of the books I currently have access to. I will provide the Virtual Tabletop (VTT) environment via Roll20.net where players can move their character tokens during exploration and combat scenarios. I will create character tokens based on the artwork or digital image of their character to be used on the VTT maps. I will develop a set of Discord channels on the RPG Storytelling server for players to utilize during the course of the campaign. I will offer the player the choice between Discord and Zoom for the audio/video communication between players during the game.
Gameplay details
As the Game Master (GM) I will endeavor to keep the game moving at a speed that is appropriate for the players. I will be sending a link to my Lines and Veils document so that players can let me know which things they can handle being included in the game and which things should not be included. I have a standing policy that certain things are might be mentioned but never fully described (e.g, "it looks as if someone may have been tortured here, if a certain situation has the potential to become too graphic they will instead result in a "fade to black" (i.e., sexual situations between consenting characters) while other things will never be included (i.e., sexual assault, the act of torture, child abuse, etc.). Each campaign will have a set of designated Discord channels specific to that campaign where the players will be able to chat with each other and and me as the GM during and between games to discuss things that are important to them as players and as characters. Each of the Lines and Veils will be included and added to, as needed, within a special channel of the Discord for that game. A players mental health will always take precedence over the scenarios of the game. Each player will have a private channel between themself and the GM so that anything about the character or the player can be discussed in a safe and private environment.

How will character creation work
A campaign environment will be created on the D&D Beyond website where players will create and store their characters for use during the campaign. The characters will be created by the players during that campaign's Session Zero. Session Zero allows players to discuss with the Game Master their ideas for the character they would like to create, ask questions about specific aspects of the character they would like to create, and seek help from the GM or other players about how to create their new character. The Player's Guide I developed for this campaign will offer the players a general overview of the campaign, guidelines for playing in a gothic horror game environment, and necessary character creation steps and limitations. For example, during the creation process, in the section labeled "Sources," Homebrew will remain unchecked until the character is fully created. After the character has been created, Homebrew and other sources will be turned back on so that various spells, equipment, magical items, feats, and more can be added to the character sheet.
