Street Wolves: Los Angeles
Savage Worlds | Campaign
About the adventure
Welcome to the shadowy neon-soaked streets of yesterday. Street Wolves is a licensed setting for Savage Worlds that takes place in an alternate, retro-futuristic vision of the late 1980s. Heavily influenced by classic '80s neo-noir TV shows like "Miami Vice", "Hunter", and "The Equalizer", blended with a heavy dose of synthwave aesthetics, Street Wolves casts the player characters as members of a covert (and illegal) organization that prowls the city fighting outside the system against the forces of darkness and chaos, doing the work that no one else can. The setting also features a mysterious phenomenon called "Vapor" that has befallen a dozen or so cities across the globe. While invisible during the day, once the sun goes down, Vapor's strange effects become clear. The night sky becomes filled with luminous pink and purple hues, and lights glow in vibrant colors and leave brief glowing trails behind them. Some people are unlucky enough to become "Vapor Poisoned," granting them unusual powers. While Street Wolves is written to take place in and around Miami, this campaign will instead center around the greater Los Angeles area, with stories ranging from corporate intrigue and foiling terrorist plots to dealing with gang conflicts and rubbing elbows with the Hollywood elite. While experience with the Savage Worlds system will be a plus, this game is open to all comers (18+), of all levels of experience.
Street Wolves is a modern-style game based in a retro-futuristic alternate vision of the 1980s. The campaign will feature a mix of investigative problem solving, significant roleplaying, as well as combat.

Storytelling
We were playing a learning one shot, so keep in mind that that is the framework for the ideas presented here. To cover the basic, more universal, things first. I found that Mikey did a great job running the oneshot and was well prepared. Things went smoothly and I feel like even if I had been brand new to everything, the system, the VTT, etc. he had the skill to make sure that I could navigate and do what I needed to do which is great for beginners in whatever element you're a beginner in. Now on to the more individual things. I enjoyed talking to him and having him as a GM. The degree to which you get along with someone depends on both people and fine people can fail to click, so I can't tell you that you will absolutely love him as a universal truth, but I can tell you I enjoyed him. I can tell you that he was personable and patient. It was a oneshot, so I don't actually have tons of games under my belt with him, but I left the session feeling like I would enjoy playing with him long term and like we both loved much of the same things about the game we were playing. In this case, it was Savage Worlds with its fast and fun system and having fun with tropes. I may update if I end up playing a longer term game, if only to reaffirm that experience demonstrates that my thought was accurate, but even if I don't, I feel confident in saying that I had fun playing with him.
Mikey took me through character creation, explaining and helping me choose hindrances, edges, and skills. We talked about what would be useful and what would not for my character. Then we ran a short scenario where I could get used to the Savage Worlds system, the combat, and asking questions. He was knowledgeable and patient. From his description of events and the scene I could see exactly what the situation was and what options were available. I would definitely play with Mikey again and would highly recommend him. He's an outstanding GM!
Very educated and seasoned GM, and it's apparent to me even as someone who is new to TTRPGs in general. Communicated effectively to us before session, and during the session went over each and every necessary detail, and answered anything that we had questions about or gave tips on things that could be helpful. He made the session fun, we all had laughs, and definitely leaned into the rule of cool while still abiding by the rules. Definitely made me excited for the Savage Worlds system, and I'm confident he would GM other systems very well. Looking forward to joining a future game of his!
Mikey showed myself and several other newbies how to play Savage Worlds. He was polite, patient, explained everything well and was good fun. I had a great time learning to play and we covered an impressive amount in quite a short period of time - with everything being illustrated with a "show, don't tell" attitude to learning. We had alot of laughs too. Really impressed with his Foundry setup as well! I would love to play a game run by Mikey, and so should you!
Mikey is a great DM. He takes the time to walk the players through the mechanics of the game. I like how he blends real world ideas and concepts into the game settings. He's willing to listen to your idea to make the game that much more enjoyable and even if it's not he'll still tell you it's a cool idea. His style of play is great and the session about how to play Savage Worlds is great for those who are looking for a new system to try. Highly recommend to those looking for a world class DM.

How to prepare
A microphone is essential. A webcam is also ideal, since I greatly prefer the level of interaction that is fostered by being able to see each others' faces, expressions, and gestures while in the game. If you have not used Foundry before as a player, I strongly encourage you to find one of the many excellent tutorials available on YouTube. This will help streamline things as we jump into play. Although Foundry VTT does have on on-board voice/camera capability, I have discovered that it is far less reliable than it should be. To that end, we will be using Discord for voice/camera communications. Those players without secondary monitors may find themselves needing to switch back and forth between the two apps. In terms of advance preparation... players should read through a Google Slides presentation that I have prepared, that gives a rundown of the essential elements of the setting that all players should understand. Links to the presentation will be provided once players sign up for the game. Otherwise, the best preparation would be to go re-visit some of these classic '80s movies and TV shows to capture the vibe: -Miami Vice -Airwolf -Knight Rider -Die Hard -Blue Thunder -To Live and Die in L.A. -Magnum P.I. -Wiseguy -MacGyver -The Equalizer -The A-Team -Riptide -The Greatest American Hero -Beverly Hills Cop
What I provide
The game will be hosted through Foundry VTT, with an abundance of custom tokens and content. As a GM, I enjoy putting a lot of work into enhancing the immersion effect that virtual roleplaying can provide, including (when connection bandwidth and processor power allows) using music, lighting, and sound effects when appropriate. I also enjoy making custom Hero Forge models for PC and NPC portraits/tokens. I have been playing Savage Worlds for decades and know the rules well enough that I am comfortable with modifying or discarding them on the fly in order to help encounters flow in a smoother and more exciting way. In other words, I tend to balance Rules as Written with the Rule of Cool, as it seems appropriate to the game and the overall enjoyment of everyone at the table. In terms of flavor, I tend to lean more towards the serious and dramatic side of things rather than the zany and whimsical, although I do appreciate the value of letting things go every now and then. In the context of Street Wolves, think more Miami Vice and Spenser: For Hire rather than The A-Team and Riptide, but not in a one-sided 'all or nothing' way. After all, every good '80s action show has to have at least one "everyone laughs" freeze frame before the credits roll.
Gameplay details
The campaign will have a Session Zero, where we will discuss not only game rules, setting, and character creation, but player safety concerns. While it is impossible to know and avoid all potential triggers, the GM will actively work to avoid any known triggers or unwanted scenarios that are communicated to them. If such situations do arise in the game, all players are encouraged to call for a pause so that the GM can appropriately handle it, including potential retconning, rewinding, and modification of future campaign plans to avoid such scenarios moving forward. If any player needs to step away for a while out of consideration for their own mental/emotional health and wellbeing, this will be blanketly embraced as necessary, with no consequences in-game or out-of-game. This game is LGBTQIA+ friendly, and any comments and statements that are hostile to this community will not be tolerated. Any player who makes such comments may be removed from the game without warning.

How will character creation work
Since Street Wolves is designed to be an ensemble team style setting, character creation would best be done collaboratively, to make sure everyone's character has something that they do better than anyone in the team and can be called upon for their expertise. Players should come to Session Zero with a couple of concepts loosely-developed in their heads, but ready to shift gears if necessary. This will be especially helpful to any players who have never played Savage Worlds before, so the rules and options can be better explained.
