Armies of Despair: The Desolation of Ezra
Fight for hope in a war-torn land of trench magic, undead hordes, and silence from the gods. Ezra is dying—can you outlive it?
About the adventure
I'm thrilled to have you at the table! Here’s a glimpse into the setting: The Armies of Despair: Desolation of Ezra is the first in an epic three-part campaign, spanning levels 3 to 20. Inspired by the brutal battles of WWI and other large-scale conflicts, this setting weaves together elements of warfare, dark magic, and explores the concepts of true good and evil, along with the moral ambiguity of war. The Armies of Despair (AoD) are led by Emperor Aegis Despair IV, an ancient Tiefling noble and head of Fogholt. Founded centuries ago on Ezra’s eastern coast as a haven for persecuted Tieflings, Fogholt became an empire where Tieflings ruled and Dragonborn served as laborers, soldiers, and officials. Through its powerful magical industry, Fogholt grew prosperous and became the world’s leading producer of enchanted items. Despair Wares are so widespread that even Ezra’s peasants sleep with a +1 weapon beside them, transforming the region into a high-magic land. For years, Fogholt remained largely peaceful—until five years ago, when Aegis imposed strict penalties on unsanctioned magic, tolerating only that blessed by Nuitari, god of evil magic. Soon after, Aegis sent his army across Ezra. But instead of invading, the AoD marched through the land, proclaiming Nuitari’s claim over all Ezra. Massive black orbs appeared in the skies, dampening non-Nuitari magic and limiting teleportation and other spells near them. The Elves, Dwarves, and Half-Orcs, wary of breaking the peace, allowed this march to continue through their lands unchallenged. Tensions rose when Aegis discovered the humans of Ezra’s western coast had crafted firearms. When the AoD demanded this technology, the humans refused, and the AoD retaliated, revealing pacts with Chromatic Dragons. These dragons unleashed fiery attacks before AoD soldiers reached city gates, devastating human strongholds. The AoD seized firearm production knowledge, using it to expand their power across Ezra. Appalled by the AoD’s tactics, the Elves, Dwarves, and Half-Orcs formed The Last United Army of Elves, Dwarves, and Half-Orcs—or the EDO. Eighteen months into this brutal war, the EDO is outmatched but determined, and they’re turning to unconventional allies. Your Role in the Fight: The campaign begins as your party, a group of EDO-hired mercenaries, journeys to the front lines. Some come seeking revenge, others after glory or coin. But rumors of a new black orb soon to appear over the occupied orc fortress of Throk raise the stakes. Whispers abound that Morthos Angelbane, a terrifying warrior and brilliant tactician leading the AoD’s western forces, is behind Throk’s occupation. Each step toward the front brings new dangers and choices to test your loyalty, resolve, and purpose.

About me
I'm currently a House DM at The Kobold Lounge, where I run 3 homebrew campaigns for adults, as well as an introductory game for kids and another for teens. I started with a weekly game at my house. Shortly after I learned to play, I had to move. To keep up with my new hobby, I found and joined ahome game that was posted online. It was a terrible experience. Nobody at the table was having fun except for the DM, who delighted in playing against his party. His players looked and sounded bored, almost miserable; I never went back. Instead, I decided to start my own game with one goal: to make sure everyone has fun! -- If money is an obstacle, please DM me. I care more about us having fun than making money. I put a lot of effort into becoming the DM I am today, I make immersive, creative content that literally over a hundred players have loved & that's why I'm here. I'd like to make a living doing this, but I care about my players & that's never going to change.--- I started running my first homebrew D&D campaign in 2016. Since then I've engaged in collaborative storytelling with a ton of amazing players. I enjoy being a Sandbox DM, and I love players with unique ideas they want to try. My tables, physical and virtual, are the place to try out that crazy character idea or homebrewed subclass. I want to DM on StartPlaying to reach a wide player base, bring people together to have a blast, and provide opportunities for players everywhere to participate in my games.

Rule of Cool
Oh my gosh he is such a creative dm. I love how many impressions he can do and he does all the voices for every single character. He made it so engaging. I have only played one game with him but I will definitely play more with him he is amazing. He is really cool and makes the game easy for everyone.
I joined one of Nugs one-shot campaigns and it was a lot of fun. It was my first DnD campaign and i felt very included. He along with the rest of the table was very patient with me which was helpful and allowed my creativity to flow. The campaign itself was fun. It had its challenging moments but wasnt too hard that made it feel overwhelming. Definitely would recommend Nug to new players and even vets if they want to join a campaign that likes to have fun.
Coolest GM I've ever had. Im not very experienced but I've had problems getting into DND in the past because of inexperienced and rather boring GMs. Nug Gnome keeps my attention and encourages my silly antics (I hate feeling like I'm following a script to a tee). I find many other players in his sessions to be creative and cool as well. would not recommend to traditionalists who don't like the rule of cool. I also really appreciate a place that feels safe at the table while maintaining a mature rating for us socially conscious but drug and violence seeking enthusiasts.
Character creation
Creating your character
There will be an opportunity to build characters during Session 0, but you're more than welcome to come with a character already prepared. Generally speaking, I have almost 0 restrictions on character creation. I love hosting games that allow my players to be as creative, chaotic, and bizarre as they truly want to be. As far as actual character creation mechanics, you'll roll your stats, rerolling ALL 1's Im open to virtually any idea, just run it by me. If something seems a little too OP or potentially game breaking, we can work together to find a way for you to explore those ideas.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need a discord account, with at least a mic, webcams are highly encouraged but not required. A dndbeyond account is a necessity. We'll discuss all homwbrew rules at session 0. Having a familiarity with the D&D 5e system is helpful but not required at all.
What DM Nug Gnome brings to the table
VTT, character voices, ambient music, sound effects, custom maps, races, subclasses, and items. You can expect intense, creative combat and a DM very dedicated to role-playing. I take pride in playing monsters, enemies and other NPCs as true to form as possible. I'm very much a Rule of Cool DM & tend to encourage the more chaotic ideas my players come up with. I implement a number of house rules, using D&D 5e as a framework.
