About the adventure
⦿ Adventure along the dark and gritty fantasy frontier ⦿ Uncover secrets of a long-lost empire ⦿ Navigate your way through complicated faction politics ⦿ Deal with faith, religion, racial prejudice and war ⦿ Brave the depths of a vast forest of Davokar, where ancient evil stirs Ruins of Symbaroum is a 5e conversion of a popular Swedish RPG Symbaroum. It retains most of the spirit of the original setting while using the familiar ruleset. There are a few changes in the rules, mainly concerning spellcasting and rests. Combats are rarer, but much more dangerous than in many 5e campaigns. The Throne of Thorns is an epic chronicle that spans six full-scale books, and will take your characters from humble beginnings as adventurers and fortune hunters all the way to becoming movers and shakers in the murky waters of Ambrian politics. Nations will be toppled, terrible prophecies will come to life and the great darkness of Davokar will finally show its' hand in this thrilling and truly epic campaign. Alberetor, the cradle of humankind, fell in the war with the Dark Lords. Your people emerged victorious from that struggle... but there was a cost. The land is dead now, barren and lifeless; ash falls from the sky and nothing grows there. Thus Queen Korinthia leads the exodus of her people to the north, where the enormous and ancient forest of Davokar looms. It offers salvation and damnation in equal measure; once upon a time, an ancient empire dwelt where the forest is now, yet only ruins remain of it. The forest is rich in natural resources, treasures and wonders, but is also deadly and unforgiving to those who come unprepared. This new promised land offers in the shadow of Davokar, Ambria, offers new hope to the settlers, yet also retains the troubles of old Alberetor; dukes squabble, scheme and plot to take the throne, the Church of Prios is enforcing the faith with an iron fist, while dark cults and terrible monsters lurk in the shadows. And in the depths of Davokar old darkness stirs once again, opposed only by a handful of those who everyone considers mortal enemies...
This is a different approach to a well-known and loved game engine. Rules are pretty much the same, with some exceptions: new spellcasting system that doesn't rely on spell slots - instead, you juggle Corruption points you get for casting magic or using magic items. New ancestries and classes are less heroic than in the regular 5e, in line with the gritty and dark world of Symbaroum. It will be dangerous and adventures will require solutions out of the box, as well as teamwork and tactics. Social and adventuring skills are equally important.

How to prepare
You will require Discord and a Roll20 account. Familiarity with the rules is welcome, but not required - I will explain and guide you as we play, and the mechanics are fairly simple anyway. Bring your dark fantasy tropes and vibes with you, and be ready to dive into a bleak and at times melancholic Scandinavian-inspired setting full of danger and adventure. And have a spare character. Just in case.
What I provide
I'll bring the book (Player's Guide) to share with those who don't already have it, the game and character sheets fully set up on Foundry - and, of course, my experience and passion for the game!
Gameplay details
Symbaroum is a fairly gritty and dark game that deals with themes such as corruption by power, human vs. nature and the merciless struggle for survival. We will use Lines & Veils, discussed before the adventure. I've put up some of the content warnings in the tags, but the stories may not necessarily be limited to those.

How will character creation work
Character creation follows the regular rules of D&D 5e: choose your race, your class, your subclass, etc. The classes and races are all new, and are described in the Player's Guide (which I will gladly share if you don't already own it). You can create a character yourself, but if you need any assistance please don't hesitate to reach out.
