About the adventure

Have you ever wanted to attend a school for those with magical gifts? Have you ever wanted to mix scenarios that have an emphasis on classes/exams with open world or emergent gameplay? This is the one for you. For those that haven't played Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos, it is a module for 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons that features a magical school called Strixhaven, kind of like Hogwarts but for DnD. I have created a list of expanded classes for the party to take, as well as long lasting rewards that can be gained depending on how well the individual does! Players will be able to take classes and exams while also having an emerging story take place alongside those classes that draws the party together. If you have played Hogwarts: Legacy, then you have an idea of what I mean. Here is a sneak peak at some of the available classes: Fundamentals of Arcane Theory Mystical Runes and Glyphs Introduction to Divination Illusions and Altered Perception and more! Join me as we work together to create a curriculum of interesting classes you will enjoy, and create the systems and mechanics that are rewarding for all. The length of this campaign could run for up to a full year, or even more with dedicated weekly sessions! If you enjoy a more hearty wizarding school experience, this is a great option for you. I am more than willing to answer any questions, concerns or otherwise so feel free to ask!

About me

Greetings and hello! My name is Darren, and I have been a DM/GM for a long time now, close to 15 years (Off and on). I have been a consistent DM for the last 6-7 years now with DnD 5e, and I have DM'ed groups for Pathfinder, DnD 3.5, Call of Cthulhu, and a home-brewed system for "Metro 2033" (Based largely off Call of Cthulhu, mind you). I am a very easy to communicate with as a DM, as I often have plenty of free time, so I can hop onto discord for a call anytime to clear up information or answer questions, even via chat. While my focus leans towards tactical combat, I also allow for a wide variety of homebrew mechanics to allow your vision of a cool (but still balanced) character to come to life! So do not hesitate to talk to me about a build you find fun, but might been a little tweaking to make it viable. Well that is my spiel, hopefully you are convinced to play with me now! See you in the game! - Darren

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Options: All character types and class combos from any official D&D source book! Third Party content is subject to approval, simply because I have not reviewed them all. These include all 3rd party content from DnD Beyond including but not limited to: Critical Role, Dungeon Dudes/Drakkenheim, Grim Hollow, etc etc. Basically any official species/race is permitted as Strixhaven attracts the magically gifted from all corners. ---------------- Starting Level: 3 Ending Level: 12 Standard Array or Point Buy are fine! Average HP (not rolled) ---------------- 2024 vs 2014 characters: I believe players should be allowed to stay with 2014 rules if they wish, its basically a different edition but WOTC (creators of DnD) refuse to label it as such. So for this campaign, you can choose to make a fully 2024 or fully 2014 character. Keep in mind that you cannot choose 2024 options if you are playing a fully 2014 character. This includes to fancy new weapon masteries, updated class/subclass options, updated feats list, etc etc. 2024 characters however can access any parts of 2014 that have not been updated, including subclasses. Banned Spells, Features and Traits: While I don't really want to outright ban any options, I do think some could pose a problem if used excessively. If that becomes the case, I will work with you to help tune the spell or features in such a way that they are still fun and engaging, without ruining content for others. I hope you understand!

The current party

The party is level 5 and consists of: Twilight Cleric Draconic Sorcerer Scribe Wizard Bladesinger Wizard They are currently nearing the end of their first year (out of 4).

How Darren J creates a safe table

Session 0 will be free, as I assume many DM's do. I will include the Monte Cook RPG Consent Checklist in the preparation materials, which you will be able to view upon joining. Those those unsure of what this is, it is simply a checklist of items that you can say you would feel a little uneasy with having in the game, or want to have removed outright.
