Every city claims to have them, and each one insists theirs is the finest. Larger urban areas often claim to host several of these elusive spots. I’m referring, of course, to secret bars—the kind that lack a sign out front and require a special password for entry. You’ve likely heard whispers of them but never truly sought one out until that intriguing email landed in your inbox. The subject line read “Secret Bar,” and for a moment, you considered dismissing it as junk. Yet, as your finger hovered over the delete button, a curious voice within urged you to take a peek. What harm could it do? Just remember to avoid any attachments. That urge to explore quickly overcame your hesitation, and before you knew it, the email was open. Its message was brief yet captivating: “SECRET BAR: If you’re seeking adventure, unafraid of the depths of hell or the heights of heaven, join us. Be at Washington Square tonight at 2 AM. Wear a black shirt and hold a coffee cup with the word ‘Seeker’ inscribed on it. Take a seat on one of the benches facing east. This is your sole invitation; miss it, and you’ll never receive another. PS: Come alone, and keep this to yourself.” You pondered the possibility of it being a prank, but even if it turned out to be a bust, there were plenty of lively spots around Washington Square, and with no work the next day, why not take a chance? After all, what’s the worst that could happen?
