About the adventure

The cannon and muskets are loaded. The crew waits with weapons drawn. The captain hoists the Jolly Roger and waits for the prey ship to strike their colors, or turn and fight. Either way, you're getting your cut of the booty! All are welcome! Never played a TTRPG before? Come aboard, me hearty, we'll show you the ropes. Old hand at the dice? You'll find adventures and loot galore here. I've created a whole new world for you to explore, full of trade ships waiting to be raided, islands to explore, and villages to conquer! Let's be pirates! We'll use the D&D 5e system for character creation, but we're going to add in guns, a ship combat mini-game, and for the more bookish types, trade goods and cargo. We'll start at 3rd level as newly-signed swabs on an established pirate ship, The Loyal Ranger. This will give us a chance to find our sea legs before moving on to the players getting their own ship!

Game style

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Combat Heavy

“Combat Heavy” games emphasize the combat mechanics within their systems over roleplay or puzzle solving. There are frequent and longer battles with enemies and a greater emphasis on tactical game play.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Recruiting notes

We'll build our characters together during session zero. Stats will be 4d6 drop the lowest. 5e primarily, 2024 updates by discussion with the GM only We're currently on a large pirate ship, so there's plenty of room on the crew for new characters to "already be there."

How to prepare

You will need a mic and Discord, at least. Webcams are optional.

What I provide

Rule of Cool will be the main thing. We'll do lots of roleplaying theater of the mind, but combat will be on OwlbearRodeo.

Gameplay details

We will discuss what's off the table at our session zero, but some things I won't allow at the table include homophobia/transphobia, sexual assault, and racism. X, N, and O cards can be invoked via webcam or direct message, whichever is most comfortable.
