DnD2024 Xoblob Detective Agency - Waterdeep Living đłď¸ââ§ď¸đłď¸âđâż
Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Level Up Advanced 5th Edition | Campaign
About the adventure
Waterdeep isn't just a backdrop for grand adventuresâit's a living, breathing city full of ambition, intrigue, and daily struggles. In this slice-of-life D&D game, youâre not treasure hunters or mercenariesâyouâre new merchants trying to carve out a niche from your home in Trollskull Alley. Here, your neighbors are as much a part of your story as you are: * Train as an apprentice with Avi and Embric, the genasi smiths. * Study the art of apothecary under Fala, the eladrin druid. * Help the elderly Rishaal run his bookshop... or strike out on your own! You'll need to negotiate guild politics, outmanoeuvre rivals, and navigate city-wide festivals. All the while, you'll need to pay your way in a lavishly expensive city. đď¸ Deeply Rooted Characters â Your birthday, your family, your old school rival, your favorite street food vendor - weâll build characters who truly belong in Waterdeep. đď¸ A World That Moves Around You â The city doesnât wait for heroes. Taxes must be paid, permits secured, and reputations built. The city is a central character, with her own seasons and unexpected encounters. đ High Stakes, Low Swords â The drama isnât in dungeon delves but in dinner parties, guild feuds, and the cutthroat world of commerce. (Although there are fortunes to be made in Undermountain!) This is Waterdeep as youâve never played it before - not as reckless adventurers, but as people with lives to live, fortunes to make, and stories to tell. Are you ready to make your mark in the City of Splendours?
If you enjoy the joyously strange world of the Forgotten Realms and want to spend less time killing and more time living there, this is the game for you! Learn the DnD 2024 character creation rules in a slice-of-life story about a group of neighbours and friends who live in one of the best described cities in RPG history. Join the Xoblob Detective Agency in Waterdeep's Dock Ward, a motley and broadly clueless set of novice adventurers as they try to solve minor and strange crimes in the big city. This is a light-hearted game where you'll see very little combat, but a lot of melodrama with relationships too complex for even a strange mauve gnome to chart.

How to prepare
To join the game, youâll need: đ¤ A Discord account â with a mic (and preferably a webcam) for game sessions. đ˛ A D&D Beyond account â youâll get a campaign link once you sign up. Thatâs it! No need to have a fully built character beforehandâweâll create and refine them together during Session Zero. Looking forward to playing with you!
What I provide
I'm an experienced DM who's able to create a comfortable space for my players where you'll hopefully forge friendships both in and out of character. I'm fascinated by the culture and politics of fantasy settings, which helps me to make a world you'll feel you can really inhabit in your imagination. You'll have full access to all the dndbeyond content you need for the game and you'll also get access to a database on harpy.gg where you'll have all the main characters you encounter. We all need help remembering who did what! I also use heroforge to make portraits of characters and I encourage the players to do the same. My players say they love the distinct, quirky and credible NPCs they encounter, each of which has clear motives and a different voice. Your DM isn't your enemy. I'm here to help you tell the best story we possibly can!
Gameplay details
This game is a shared storytelling experience, and your comfort and enjoyment matter. Prejudice and discrimination appear only as things to be defeated. I'm a queer, disabled DM, so you can be sure of an experience where your own story and identity is embraced. đš Game Etiquette & Boundaries â When you sign up, youâll receive a link to the gameâs Etiquette guide, which includes a Lines and Veils document. This helps us set expectations and shape the kind of story we want to tell together. đš The Luxton Technique â During Session Zero (or your introduction), weâll discuss the Luxton Technique, which encourages open conversation about how a scene should unfold. If something isnât working, we can pause, adjust, or rewind to ensure the experience stays enjoyable for everyone. đš Session Check-ins â At the start and end of each session, Iâll check in with players to help keep character drama separate from player dynamics and to make sure youâre having the best possible experience. My goal is to build a game where your character may face obstacles and challenges, but the players are supported to play a safe, escapist game. I know we all need that at the moment!

How will character creation work
You'll start at level 1 using the 2024 rules. Feel free to start sketching out a character and share your ideas in the game Discord! During Session Zero (or in your introduction), weâll take the time to flesh out your characterâs life in Waterdeepânot just their class and stats, but their birthday, faith, family, friends, and personal history. These details will help anchor your character in the city and make them part of its living world. I encourage you to think beyond genetics when choosing a character conceptâfocus on their culture, background, and the life theyâve lived. For inspiration, consider backgrounds like: đš A cosmopolitan scholar raised in Waterdeepâs libraries đš A merchant caravanner with stories from across FaerĂťn đš An apprentice craftsman looking to make a name for themselves đš A refugee from the Underdark or a traveler from distant Abeir To keep things simple and fitting for the setting, please stick to the core books (Playerâs Handbook 2024 and Dungeon Masterâs Guide 2024) plus Monsters of the Multiverse, Xanatharâs Guide to Everything, and Tashaâs Cauldron of Everything. Since the game is set in the Forgotten Realms, characters from Magic: The Gathering books or other D&D worlds wonât be a great fit. During Session Zero (or online), weâll also go through a collaborative interview process to weave your characterâs backstory into the fabric of the cityâand into the lives of the other players. Let's get stuck in and build a community!
