About the adventure

A D&D 5e campaign for 4th level characters. The Empire ended many generations ago, even though most did not realize it at first. It did not fall, exactly, as simply lie down for a quick nap and never bothered to get back up again. The elves left, but no-one, not even the handful of elves remaining, knows where they went. Much of the magic in the world went with them. Magic is sometimes treated with awe, sometimes with fear, sometimes with hatred, but it is never common. But there are signs of things becoming better. The highways being mostly *safe* instead of mostly *unsafe*. New, sturdier, strains of crops that tolerate drought and temperature changes. Petty lords reaching unsteady, but persisting, periods of peace. Now, isolated settlements, keeps, and fiefdoms litter the countryside, tied together by unmaintained roads and the brave --- or foolhardy --- caravans that travel them. Most of the remaining magic artifacts and resources were long ago gathered by The Black Talon Society, a franchised guild of problem-solvers, guards, and private enforcers. Even though they are few, their influence --- and protection --- is wide. You and your companions are new Talons, and you're ready for your first mission. *** This is a 5th edition D&D (2014 edition) campaign that promises both seasoned players and newcomers an exciting journey through a world designed to be engaging and accessible for all players. The campaign is structured around multiple shorter adventures, each spanning one to four sessions. This is designed to let you explore and uncover mysteries at your own pace, but without an indefinite long-term commitment. Unlike a "westmarch" campaign, we will follow a set schedule and require a minimal commitment to 1-4 sessions for each adventure arc. After each adventure, any magic items and experience carry over to the next, allowing you to continue building your character’s story even if you cannot participate in every adventure arc. New players can join at the beginning of each adventure arc. If you’ve joined my Black Talons one-shots before, you’ll be pleased to know your characters can continue their journey. While some plot elements may resemble previous one-shots, each new quest offers unique challenges and fresh twists. ## What's the difference between it and your one-shots? * Individual sessions will be *shorter* -- approximately two to three hours instead of four. * This campaign will have threads and entire plots from the one-shots, but they are changed in ways both big and small. * Players will have more time to explore the world and run down various plot threads and clues. * Player actions and decisions will have a more obvious and lasting effect on the game world. * Character's backstories and personal goals will be *much* more relevant.

Gameplay details

Creativity and cooperation with other players is incentivized. The adventure allows a lot of choices on which quests will be taken, as well as how they will be solved, This is an inclusive game, where people from all backgrounds are welcome. There is zero tolerance for the intolerant. 🙈 🙉 🙊 Content Warnings: My adventures usually end up somewhere between PG-13 and a hard R rating. While this is not a horror game, horrific elements may appear, and bad characters may do bad stuff. The content warnings are *possible* elements; not all of them are planned to appear. Sexual assault by characters will NOT be tolerated. I avoid sexual assault whenever possible narratively, going VERY far out of my way to do so. 🦄SAFETY TOOLS🦄 To ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all players, I use the following safety tools: - A safety checklist to ensure that all players are aware of potential triggers and sensitive topics - Session zero to discuss concerns and boundaries before the game begins - Open Door Policy - Breaks During Gameplay We'll discuss any content you might be uncomfortable with before the game, and I can 100% adjust the adventure to fit your needs. If during the game you find yourself uncomfortable with anything, anyone can say "Pause for a second!" and we will pause the game and address your concerns out-of-character immediately. I am personally a survivor of emotional abuse; I take triggers seriously.

How will character creation work

😎 PRE-GENS AVAILABLE 😎 - 4th Level - 27 Attribute Point Buy - No full elves, genasi, aasimar, tieflings, or other obviously “magical” races (dragonkind, etc). Half-orc, half-elf are fine. Check with me if you have a question there. - Class/Backgrounds from the Players Handbook, Sword Coast Adventurers Guide, Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything - No evil characters. - If using D&D Beyond, you are invited to *also* join my “One Shots and Sundry” campaign so that you have access to the rulebooks I have when creating your character. - Equipment: Use generated basic gold for purchasing equipment, and you may have one “uncommon” item (list of item rarity at https://dnd5e.info/magic-items/magic-items-by-rarity/). I'm not particularly interested in re-buying a whole bunch of new content, so I'm sticking with 5e for the moment. If there is a feature from the new edition that you wish to bring in, please let me know and we'll talk about it.
