About the adventure

You awake in a prison hold run by the spider-like Drow, farther underground than you can possibly imagine. What ensues is a jailbreak, a desperate climb to see the sunlight, and ultimately a conflict that will determine the future of all who dwell in the Underdark. โš”๏ธ Expect a campaign heavy on roleplay, negotiation, and working with your party to creatively overcome or escape from challenges - might does not always make right in these dangerous depths! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ This is a beginner-friendly campaign that sees players rise from Level 1 all the way to Level 15. This is an inclusive and LGTBQ+ friendly table. Expect Rule of Cool, Natural 20 Critical Successes as well as Natural 1 Critical Failures, and taking a new lens to some of the age-old D&D tropes in this campaign. ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Out of the Abyss contains themes of imprisonment and escape, fungal and spider horror, long journeys through isolated underground caverns, and madness caused by exposure to demon lords. We'll discuss any potential trigger topics during our one-on-one Session 0 prior to the game, but it's good to be aware of these topics up front.

How to prepare

- A working microphone; webcam is optional - A Discord account If you're a new player, that's all you need for us to begin our Session 0 and get you set up! If you've played before, you're welcome to create your Level 1 character ahead of our call.

What I provide

I'll bring a virtual tabletop for us to use called Owlbear Rodeo, vivid storytelling, and character voices. You can expect a game that's Rule of Cool, centered around your character, your interactions with the world and the party, and ultimately on telling an engaging story for everyone at the table.

Gameplay details

Each player's experience begins with a Session 0, where we'll either review the character you've come up with or build it together on the call. We'll discuss any potential triggers that player may have, and they'll be added to a list of topics to handle sensitively or avoid altogether for this campaign. During play, should triggering content arise, players have the ability to pause the game at any time and raise how to proceed. Some bullets from the Luxton Technique I enjoy include - * When, in play, a player encounters triggering material, they can, if they choose, talk about that to the other players. When they do this, the other players listen. * As part of talking about it โ€” and possibly the only thing that they need say โ€” the player is given absolute fiat power over that material, expressed as a want or a need. For instance โ€œI need this to have a happy endingโ€ or โ€œI want this character to not be hurt right nowโ€ or โ€œI need this character to not get away with thisโ€. * We play towards accommodating that playerโ€™s requests. After the game, we'll have a debrief to discuss any issues that arose during the session and anything that we'd like to see going forward.

How will character creation work

If you're new to Dungeons and Dragons and learning to play for the first time, we're happy to have you! We'll have an initial one-on-one call on Discord called a 'Session 0', where we'll build your character from the ground up and get you everything that you need to start playing. If you've been playing the game for longer, feel free to craft a character ahead of time! We'll review during Session 0 and finalize the details of the story. Characters start at Level 1. Stats may be Standard, Point Buy, or Rolled. All official classes and species are acceptable, but please consult before using homebrew or third-party material. Not using Unearthed Arcana / OneD&D at this time, although keep an eye out for future campaigns once the books hit shelves! A fillable PDF character sheet will be available, but players are welcome to use other tools like the D&DBeyond character creation engine. Characters who join the campaign midway through will still begin at Level 1, but rise at a quick clip to join the player party's current level. Milestone-based leveling.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: Low
  • Roleplay: High
  • Puzzles: Low
