About the adventure
You have fallen deep into the Underdark, a subterranean realm of ancient civilizations, mushroom groves, and now a demonic threat that might overwhelm both these deep places and the world above. Together with fellow strangers and stragglers from the surface, it's a desperate trek through these bizarre biomes to extinguish the growing flame and see the sunlight once again. ⚔️ Expect a campaign heavy on roleplay, negotiation, and working with your party to creatively overcome or escape from challenges - might does not always make right in these dangerous depths! 🏳️🌈 This is a beginner-friendly campaign that sees players rise from Level 1 all the way to Level 15. This is an inclusive and LGTBQ+ friendly table. Expect Rule of Cool, Natural 20 Critical Successes as well as Natural 1 Critical Failures, and taking a new lens to some of the age-old D&D tropes and reimagined lore in this campaign. 🕷️ Out of the Abyss contains themes of imprisonment and escape, fungal and spider horror, long journeys through isolated underground caverns, and madness caused by exposure to demon lords. We'll discuss any potential trigger topics during our one-on-one Session 0 prior to the game, but it's good to be aware of these topics up front.

About me
Hello! I'm William, a queer horror author and creator of the fiction podcast Hello From The Hallowoods. I've been an avid RPG player and DM for over ten years, and I love the feeling that comes with sitting down with a group of friends to tell a story together. My games are inclusive, beginner-friendly, and focused on creating a fun and engaging story for each member of the party rather than following the nitty-gritty of the rules. Whether this is your first time playing an RPG and you don't know where to begin, or you've been playing games for decades, you're welcome at the table. I'm excited to meet new players, tell new stories, and engage with the internet audience in a new way. Let's play!

Creating your character
If you're new to Dungeons and Dragons and learning to play for the first time, we're happy to have you! We'll have an initial one-on-one call on Discord called a 'Session 0', where we'll build your character from the ground up and get you everything that you need to start playing. If you've been playing the game for longer, feel free to craft a character ahead of time! We'll review during Session 0 and finalize the details of how you fit into the story. Characters start at the party's current level. Stats may be Standard, Point Buy, or Rolled. All official classes and species are acceptable, but please consult before using homebrew or third-party material. Levelling is milestone-based. A fillable PDF character sheet will be available, but players are welcome to use other tools like the D&DBeyond character creation engine.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
- A working microphone; webcam is optional - A Discord account If you're a new player, that's all you need for us to begin our Session 0 and get you set up! If you've played before, you're welcome to create your character ahead of our call.
What William brings to the table
I'll bring a virtual tabletop for us to use called Owlbear Rodeo, vivid storytelling, and character voices. You can expect a game that's Rule of Cool, centered around your character, your interactions with the world and the party, and ultimately on telling an engaging story for everyone at the table.

How William creates a safe table
Each player's journey begins with a Session 0, where we'll either review the character you've created or build it together on the call. We'll discuss any potential triggers that player may have, and they'll be added to a list of topics to handle sensitively or avoid altogether for this campaign. During play, should triggering content arise, players have the ability to pause the game at any time and raise how to proceed. Some bullets from the Luxton Technique I enjoy include - * When, in play, a player encounters triggering material, they can, if they choose, talk about that to the other players. When they do this, the other players listen. * As part of talking about it — and possibly the only thing that they need say — the player is given absolute fiat power over that material, expressed as a want or a need. For instance “I need this to have a happy ending” or “I want this character to not be hurt right now” or “I need this character to not get away with this”. * We play towards accommodating that player’s requests. After the game, we'll have a debrief to discuss any issues that arose during the session and anything that we'd like to see going forward.
