About the adventure

This is a cosmic horror campaign that takes the elements of the Cthulhu Mythos that already exist in canon D&D lore and expands upon that to fully immerse the players in a setting where the Outer Gods, Great Old Ones, and other eldritch horrors threaten to destabilize the multiverse. Player characters will be investigators of horrific mysteries both terrestrial and from beyond the stars. This campaign will start in a small town and focus on the problems arising there that only a unique few even notice or know how to solve. In time, the player characters will travel Far in their quest to protect reality from the many threats Beyond. The gameplay will focus on unraveling mysteries about strange crimes and eldritch cults seeking to cause catastrophic changes to reality as you know it, then thwarting their efforts to do so. Of course, those cultists won't go down without a fight. If you ever wanted to dig into the parts of the D&D cosmology and lore influenced by the Cthulhu Mythos, then this is the campaign for you! This is also a good fit for someone who is seeking mystery and roleplay, mixed with challenging combat. *** The town of Sothbury is a flourishing hub of academia and commerce. The Shubtree University draws people from all over the region, and even some from far beyond who want to study its vast collection of occult tomes. But some of the students and professors have studied the signs and observed the stars coming into alignment: A time of Reckoning is on the horizon, and dark powers long restrained from meddling in this reality will soon be released. Despite the urging of Divination Department Chair Robert Chambers that the Tablet of Zurguth be moved to the vault for added security in the coming month due to some impending astronomical convergence, the Head Librarian Ms. Nancy Wagner denied the request. Some time last week, the tablet was stolen. This week on Second Day, a total of 5 students that did not show up for lectures were reported missing to the University who subsequently contacted the Sothbury Constabulary. Quite separately, several fires tore through various sections of Sothbury, leaving many dead and several homeless. Something is happening, but only Professor Chambers and some of his closest associates truly have any idea what.

Additional details

How to prepare

You will need a microphone. If you want to be on camera then you will need one of those, too. You will need a roll20 and Discord account. If you need help creating a character please tell me so, and if this is your first campaign then please tell me that too so I can help you learn as we play.

What I provide

I will set up the maps in roll20 that I make myself, and curate custom sound for background music and special effects. I will also bring 24 years worth of practiced character voices, as always. In this campaign, I intend to focus mainly on mystery and roleplay as players delve into secrets humanoids were not meant to know. The main thing to keep in mind in a horror game about combat is: Combat with monsters should not be taken on without forethought. Sometimes you need to figure out its weakness, or how to bind it, banish it, soothe it, etc.

Gameplay details

In Session 0 we discuss what subject matter is acceptable and not, as well as basic rules of the table.

How will character creation work

I will help anyone who needs help with this in Session 0, but you are welcome to start working on it right away and you can message me on Discord any questions relevant to character creation. You can use roll20, DnDbeyond, a pdf sheet, or actual paper. Whatever works best for you! Please use either point buy or 4d6 (drop the lowest) for attributes. Please confine your character to the following options. Though this campaign will surely span the multiverse, most residents of Sothbury are humans, elves, dwarves, and gnomes. The average person will surely regard someone from another plane with suspicion. The Sunlord's domains are Life, Light, Nature, Order, and Peace. There are other gods for the other domains but no one would dare speak their names in polite company. People with psionic subclasses often keep their abilities hidden for fear of public scorn or persecution. Any Background will work. Feel free to message me with any questions.
