The Shattered Obelisk & Vecna: Eve of Ruin

The Shattered Obelisk & Vecna: Eve of Ruin

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

This adventure takes the classic Lost Mine of Phandelver and expands it into a full-fledged campaign. The adventure starts off well enough, delivering a wagon full of supplies to the town of Phandalin. Soon you learn of your Employer's disappearance as you begin searching for him. The dangers mount taking on goblins, bandits, and cultists. Will the heroes have what it takes to save the town of Phandalian from oblivion!?! This campaign has a mixture of various locations to explore, monsters to be fought or potentially negotiated with, mysteries, and potentially a puzzle or two to solve.

Game style

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Party notes

This will be a weekly game on Friday unless there is an American Holiday that comes up. The Phandelver & Below campaign takes characters up to 12th level. Yes, the first half of this campaign follows the original Lost Mine of Phandelver with a few changes. By popular request from the current players, Phandelver & Below will then move into the upcoming Eve of Ruin Vecna Adventure so that it takes everyone to 20th level. Point Buy for character creation, fixed hit points, and character sheets will be stored on D&D Beyond where I can "collect" and look them over. The current character levels coming in are 8th level with starting level equipment, 525 gold, and one Uncommon Magic item, plus 2 healing potions, 4 Greater Potions from me if I haven't added them already. And either 1 Rare or Very Rare magic item that way you don't feel too far behind those who have been adventuring awhile. 2014/2024 Player's Guide, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Bigby's Glory of the Giants, Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, Xanathar's, and Tasha's will be used for Character Creation. Legacy Subclass builds are accepted. I ask that any spells and feats stick to the new 2024 rules. Please keep to the world of Faerun, nothing that's specific only to Dragonlance, Eberron, Ravinca, ect. If there is something specific that you want such as the Astral Drifter from Spelljammer or the Haunted background from Ravenloft, just ask, so it can be worked out. Obviously, once we hit the Eve of Ruin half of the campaign, characters can be from anywhere. Make sure to set the Character Sheet on D&D Beyond for the Character Options from Bigby's, Fizban's, Tasha's & Xanathar's. If you want the Legacy Subclasses, make sure to click that option as well. If the Background does not already include a Feat (not to be confused with Feature), then you may add either Skilled or Tough. If you are using the new 2024 Backgrounds, follow those options. Toward the end of the month, I will schedule more sessions. As we near the end of the current campaign, I'm a little more cautious about scheduling these sessions.

How to prepare

Players will need to have a mic and a place with minimal interruptions. Bring your spirit of adventure. D&D Beyond will be used for storing character sheets. If you want your own paper, physical copy of a character sheet, go for it, just keep it up to date with the site. If you want your own character art, feel free to go for it. Digital Dice Roller - The Avrae Dice Bot is used on the Discord, once a character sheet is linked from Beyond to Discord it is relatively easy to click a stat box from Beyond to roll and have the results show up in Discord. AboveVTT - This is a Chrome/Firefox extension for the browser and allows for ease of using maps and battle mapping out areas when needed.

What I provide

The prepared adventure and flexibility as every player/character will respond differently to circumstances. I have a wide variety of books and access to D&D Beyond.

Gameplay details

I try to be a good narrator and describe the action. I get that different players will have different levels of role-playing ability and experience. While I'm alright with allowing more combat, there are points where talking and exploring can also yield more story elements. I also mention character death as sometimes the dice just go completely south on players. A less-than-optimal choice was made. Some players want the combat to be difficult, don't soft-peddle it, at the same time, yes, I'm playing the antagonists, they want to win. I will do my best to keep to the module and what's there. If I alter things, its because what was written is clearly too difficult or not a proper challenge, or I'm trying to challenge the group that's a little op or I see I've got a party of mostly spellcasters and not enough heavy hitters. Phandelver also has mutations and body transformations once we hit the second half of the campaign. I can honestly think I've covered everything, if there is something I've missed, please speak up. I do XP-based instead of milestones. I find it much easier to gauge encounters and level progress. I will list the XP earned for the session, the current total XP, and a recap of the session for the highlights.

How will character creation work

Characters are made with point buy with all characters beginning at level one with starting equipment. This will change for players joining during later sessions to help keep them up with the challenge levels of the story. If you need help with character creation, get with me before the game and I can help walk you through it or make changes needed on your sheet. The sooner I see a new player request, the sooner I am able to schedule a Session 0 or through messages help you get the character set up. Bear in mind characters will need to be from Forgotten Realms and the Sword Coast region. Please stick to the use of the Player's Guide, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Bigby's, Fizzban's, and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. I am largely flexible, if there is something you want, just ask.
