About the adventure

Welcome to Arkham! Are you interested in a longform Mystery game set in New England during the 1920’s? Do you want to play an investigator exploring the College town of Arkham, layer by layer uncovering seemingly unconnected scenarios using the Call of Cthulhu 7e System with a group of fellow investigators? If the answer is yes, “Nightmares of Arkham” may be for you. This campaign is loosely based on a variety of scenarios from all over CoC’s long History, re-written & threaded together to weave a new larger narrative for you & your fellow investigators to uncover. Instead of Combat like most TTRPGs, Investigation is going to be your focus as you wander the town & beyond, chatting to interesting NPCs, asking the right questions & uncovering clues. Note taking is advised. Be warned that not only will some NPC’s lie to you, but should the investigators get their wires crossed & make some mistakes in their analysis of the clues presented, then the story will progress with those false assumptions assumed as fact. There are many strange & deadly forces at work in New England’s Miskatonic Valley, some mundane, some esoteric, & you will need to keep a sharp wit & a good pair of running shoes if you ever hope to uncover their secrets & survive them.

About me

Do you seek to uncover secrets long buried, Battle strange eldritch monstrosities, become a hero to those unable to help themselves? I can provide you with these experiences traveller, for a price of course… Hi gang my name is Dennis or Devillo, sometimes known as Dirty Den or the BDSMDM (a name given to me by my players because of my somewhat cruel but fair treatment of their PC’s). I have been playing TTRPG’s since the early 2000’s, starting with DnD 3.5, then trying to start a campaign in DnD 4e which evolved into my Homebrew setting Voarcel for 5e. As well as other 5e games such as Tomb of Annihilation & Explorers Guide to Wildemount, I have run an ongoing Vampire the Masquerade (V5) game dubbed The Messquerade, all live streamed & archived on Youtube. I take the crafting of a fun, unique immersive experience for my players very seriously, & I endeavor to create & play a diverse cast of characters, support LGBTQ+ players, & create a safe enjoyable experience for EVERYONE at my table. While DnD5e & VtM are the two systems I have streamed a bunch of, I am also deeply into Call of Cthulhu (7th edition) & have run a bunch of private games for friends off camera. I am also hoping to one day play a bunch of other games professionally, including other World of Darkness games such as Werewolf, Changeling & Mage 20th, Kids on Bikes, Alien, Cyberpunk Red, Doctor Who, Labyrinth, & many more…

Character creation

Creating your character

Players can either choose from a set of pre-made 'tropes' that can be re-skinned to their preference (The Nosy Neighbor, the Bookstore Owner etc) or they can make an original character using the in game character creation tools.

The current party

- Ongoing campaign following several self contained yet interconnected mysteries through the locations of Arkham, Kingsport & Ipswich Massachusetts covering a variety of Investigation styles & a mix of both Mundane & Mythos threats. - Experience over 12 pre-existing scenarios taken from all over the history of the game, each organized into self contained Arcs which lead to a larger mystery. - Campaign is designed for long term play but with MANY jumping off & on points for those who need them. - No experience required, all are welcome. The character creation & essential systems including how the VTT work will be included in the session zero or a private chat for later players. - Safety tools handled in-app for ease of players. Current Cast: Irish Bootlegger Alex O'Brien. Driver & rising star in Danny O'bannion's Mob, girlfriend to assassin Bobby Sills & currently suffering an obsession with the Grave Robbing 'Dogs' of Arkham & recovering from her addiction to The Black, a potent Narcotic made from the Blood of an outer entity. Solomon Hollister, Boxing Student at Miskatonic University. Recently met Alex at an underground Fight Club in Rivertown & was hired by Bobby Sills as a bit of extra protection for Alex. Other Investigators that our players have run with so far include: Aiden Walker, a struggling Horror Writer who had been starved for inspiration before coming to Arkham, being attacked in their dreams by shadowy winged creature's & Giant Spiders. Currently enjoying some much needed downtime with his wife & his new novel. Carver Kirk, a run down ex cop turned private investigator who now carries the prison of a strange eldritch entity known as a Sin Eater. British Occultist John Collier, currently residing in the Pickering Psychopathic Hospital for opening a portal to the Court of Azathoth. Brock & Paul Blart, Arkham Police officers who are the few remaining survivors from a botched Raid on a dangerous Sorcerer. Emilia Webb, the heir to a small fortune & the legacy of a group of New England doctors who have used the Sin Eater to purge the world of 'deviant' children.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players need a computer/Laptop with a browser & graphics card capable of running Foundry VTT. They also need a Microphone & earphones to block out any echoing sounds from other players. While it is beneficial If players have a loose idea as to what type of character concept they wish to play, & provide an image to represent the character, its not a hard requirement, as pre mades can be provided.

What Dennis brings to the table

Music, images, animations and other effects to build the tone & set the stage for the players using Foundry VTT. An audio channel & chat thread in Discord dedicated to the game where the players can post gifs & strategize outside of game time. Premade characters & the tools for players to create their own. Multiple scenarios & locations filled with a variety of NPCs that can connect the players to the town of Arkham & beyond.

Homebrew rules

Instead of every scenario we roll skill increases at the end of every session. We also roll luck increase at the end of every session, depending on how much as spent, to encourage more risk taking. We also reward a d4 main attribute increase or a d10 skill increase for whichever skill they desire if a player rolls a 1.

Safety

How Dennis creates a safe table

The safety tools are embedded into the Foundry system & every new player will be guided through the various anonymous ways they can pause or skip scenes which may be of a problematic nature to them. Session Zero includes a basic rundown of the rules, including character creation, chases, combat & sanity. In & out of character discussions & non-mechanical interaction will be handled with a 3rd party Discord voice channel. All "Dice" & Character Sheets are handled by the VTT. All the players need are a browser capable of running Foundry VTT.
