Hallow's End - A Halloween D&D 5e One-Shot - Beginners Welcome

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | One-Shot

About the adventure

You and your friends find yourselves in a rickety pumpkin-shaped carriage. The carriage's interior sports worn velvet seats with brass studs, along with paper cutouts of pumpkins and skulls draped from the roof. A bowl of delectable, mysterious candies is perched on an empty seat nearby. You are dressed as your favorite Halloween creatures, monsters, and ghouls in preparation for this night. A young boy is dressed with a white sheet with eye holes cut out and happily enjoys the ride while admiring the candies and your players' costumes. Tonight, the carriage is taking you to the Night of the Wayward Souls festival in the sleepy village of Hallow's End, which you received an invitation to attend. Though you have heard of this event, you nor your friends have ever been, adding an air of excitement, curiosity, and just a little unease. You ask yourself "What fun will this night bring? What foods will they have? What kind of town is Hallow's End anyway?" This is a one-shot game for beginners and veterans to enjoy a night at a spooky, fun festival. The Halloween-themed festival is set in a high fantasy world, using D&D 5e mechanics, so you can be a half-orc barbarian, a human artificer, a tiefling bard, or many more other races and classes in the D&D world. There will be a good bit of role-play, as well as carnival games where there can possibly be mysterious, magical foods and prizes. Though you are there to enjoy the festival with the town of Hallow's End, other forces may come to interrupt your festivities. Therefore, there will be combat to enjoy along with your amusement at the Night of the Wayward Souls as well. If you love Halloween and D&D, this is a great union of the two in a fun one-shot. I hope to see you soon at Hallow's End!

Game style

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

DM runs games very smoothly, ensures each player has the opportunity to do what they want and to speak. Her scene management is great and she will not forget to come back to your character - so you will always have the chance to enjoy what you've paid for. Characters are immersive and feel unique.

I have played in 2 campaigns where Michelle is DM, and I look forward to the session every week. When I was first looking for a group at the game store, she was very accepting and I was able to hop right in their campaign. I enjoy interacting with her NPCs and getting to explore the weird places we sometimes end up.

My kids and I have played in Michelle's games for over a year. In both the kid-friendly games and the "adults-only" games, she's made D&D sessions some of the most memorable days in the last year! You definitely won't regret jumping into one of her campaigns!

I've played in two games with Michelle as a DM and in one game where she was player. She is a great DM who knows the rules but isn't afraid to ask for help with rules if needed. She does a great job at keeping things organized and keeping everyone on target when players try and stray or get sidetracked. She handles combat really well and tries to keep it moving so it doesn't get bogged down or take to long.

Michelle is very kind and friendly. She knows the rules but keeps the focus on the story. Her NPCs are entertaining, often funny. She has excellent maps and minis.

How to prepare

You will need a microphone, a webcam if you're comfortable showing your face, a DnDBeyond account (free), a Discord account for voice and video (free), and installing AboveVTT on your web browser extensions (free).  I encourage you to use a webcam as the whole group can wear Halloween costumes while we play! It's not required, but I say might as well dress up, be nerdy, be spooky, and have fun while playing a role-playing game as adults at home on our computers. AboveVTT works best with Google Chrome or Firefox. See links below for either browser extensions or use your search engine for AboveVTT Extension: Google Chrome Extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/abovevtt/ipcjcbhpofedihcloggaichibomadlei FireFox Extension: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/download/thanks/?s=direct&utm_campaign=amo-fx-cta-2691924&utm_content=rta%3AezUyZTEyNmQ0LWQyZDctNDgzYS1hMGExLTZlOGFhY2UyMzI1M30&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=addons.mozilla.org

What I provide

You will be using the AboveVTT extension and DnDBeyond to roll your virtual dice. I will be using my DMing assets to set the mood for the one-shot. This will include, but is not limited to, audio and sound effects, environmental background music/audio, and maps for the various areas you may explore in Hallow's End.

Gameplay details

We will likely using Zoom or Discord as a means to talk between each other. You can privately DM me your X, N, and O's digitally. We'll try for a short break or two (5-10 minutes) for people to stretch their legs, get food, etc. We will use Above VTT as our interactive TTRPG platform for maps and potential battles. Theatre of the mind will be used on occasion to help give more detail, facilitate role-play, or other outcomes that may not be represented on a digital map.

How will character creation work

There will be a DnDBeyond link for you to create a level 4 character. Preferably, you will need to have your character ready or nearly ready at the start of the one-shot. You will not need an extensive character background, being this is a one-shot, but it is encouraged for you to know what your character's wants, flaws, quirks, etc. are. This helps with role-playing your character with the other players and NPCs; it brings more fun to conversations and interactions. Also, think of what kind of Halloween costume your character would be wearing to the Halloween festival. You could be a Goliath fighter wearing a superhero costume, a gnome druid wearing a rubber werewolf mask, or a bugbear monk wearing a nurse costume that's two sizes too small! Be as silly, cliché, and/or ironic as you want to be with your D&D character. You will need an account on DnDBeyond. Creating an account is free, so no need to buy a subscription. If you have never played D&D or created your own character, I will have some pre-generated characters within the DnDBeyond campaign that you can claim. Feel free to reach out in the group message within the StartPlaying campaign for help with character creation. If you're comfortable with making your own character, the ability scores will be decided using standard array, and you can take the maximum HP for your character. You will use the starting equipment for your class and race. You can choose from the listed races and classes available in the DnDBeyond campaign you will join. If you have a question about a specific race or class/subclass, you are free to ask in the group message within the StartPlaying campaign. Because this is just a one-shot, we will not use homebrew 5e races or classes/subclasses.
