Similar experience to Eben. I expressed concerns about some assumptions Sands made about how my character was conducting himself during exploration. Instead of trying to understand my concern (for what was a very minor disagreement), they got defensive and accused me of not wanting to accept the consequences of my character’s actions. They then kicked me out of the game, and left as feedback that I didn’t warn them about a holiday trip (which I did, in fact; I marked the sessions as skipped in advance and also let them know via Discord). PROS: Good with Foundry + cool maps + music selection Decent at storytelling + voicing NPCs Knows the Pathfinder 2E rules well CONS: Like Eben, I found Sands a bit cold as a new player. As I got used to the Foundry UI and the nuances of some 2E rules, sometimes I made mistakes / bad assumptions, and Sands was very condescending about the way he corrected me. Most of the time it left me feeling inadequate. They showed little interest in the development of my character. I sent them a few private messages to discuss certain aspects of my character and how to integrate them into the greater story. Their answers were short and dismissive, without much effort into having a conversation. OVERALL To be fair, the other players seem to like Sands well enough, so maybe our personalities just didn’t click together or something. As far as their GM skills, they’re not the best I’ve seen, but they’re decent. I’m also not petty enough to leave 1 star just because of how they treated me, but given their interpersonal skills, I believe 3 stars is fair.
Very odd experience. I'm willing to share chat receipts from Discord for any who are curious. I expressed to this DM some mild concern for how the level of RP in their Wrath of the Righteous game wasn't in line with how the game had been advertised, and that for $30 per session I felt like that wasn't okay for me. Instead of engaging in a conversation about it or trying to work through it, or just saying a courteous goodbye, Blair attacked my abilities as a player (having never given negative feedback before, so those concerns were new to me, and even praising how the others in the group liked me in prior conversations), then kicked me out of their game and their discord quite suddenly. I'm not petty enough to give them a one star review, because as a DM I thought they were okay. Maybe not amazing for their price point, but I've certainly had worse DMs. That said: given the defensiveness of the exchange, the sudden blocking without allowing me a chance to talk it out, and what honestly was a bit of mild gaslighting, the 3 stars is as honest a review as I can give them. PROS: Good Foundry skills. Nice maps with well done layouts. Knows the rules, and when they RP they do great. CONS: One of the colder new player experiences I've had. Their interpersonal skills might rub some people the wrong way. They openly admitted to having player retention issues for this one specific game (I was the 5th or 6th player to attempt to fill the fourth slot of this Wrath game, with others before me only sticking around for one or two sessions before leaving). But many of the other players in their sphere seem to love them, so it feels a bit like a coin flip as to whether you'll get along with this DM or not.
Sands (Blair) is a great GM who above all things cares about your individual experience as a player. In the sessions I've had I feel like my experience and my character is unique and relevant in their story, which to me is the best kind of experience you can get in a Campaign. Specifically, I really like how Sands spend time with each individual player in coming up with a back story of their own yet at many points throughout the campaign feels connected and realistic. Sands is also comfortable with players coming up with new ideas or running separate storylines for individual characters, and I would really recommend them as a GM to both new and experienced TRPG players. They also feel comfortable to go to and discuss with about any issues or concerns you may have during your campaign, which I also appreciate.
