About the adventure

Your master may have been aged, but he had always been vigorous and strong. Today, however, was different. As he looked at you from behind the letter, he looked merely old. "My students," He says. "A terrible thing has occurred. Something I vowed, in my youth, to stop - but here I am. I have grown weary. I do not have the strength left in these old bones to do what must be done." "As of today, your training is over - You have all learned well, but skills unused are skills wasted. You must board our ship and go forth - seek the Indigo Islands, find the Hearth of the Elements, and assist its caretakers however they need." "And may the spirits watch over you." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Heart is a short-form campaign featuring a group of Wuxia heroes - You will be masters of martial arts and wire-fu, high-flying and far supernatural to normal people. But as grand as your skills in battle are, your emotions and passions run just as hot, making you larger-than-life characters prone to rage, melancholy, and joy. Players should expect to play a character with a powerful drive, and to take action to make their philosophy a reality, all while caught up in a conflict that will bring them against powers even greater than themselves.

About me

Hello, friends - My name is Travis, and I've been gaming for almost 25 years now, with about 18 of that as a game master. I got my start reading Lone Wolf choose-your-own-adventure books and moved on to AD&D played extremely incorrectly with my middle-school friends. Since then I've branched out into many gaming systems, AAA and Indie alike! Some systems I've run include things like D&D (3.X, 4e, PF1e, 5e), Legend of the Five Rings (3rd, 4th and 5th ed), Call of Cthulhu (6th-ish?), Exalted (3rd), Deadlands (Original), Various WoD games (Old and New), One-Roll Engine (Wild Talents, Godlike, Nemesis), Warhammer 40k (Dark Heresy 2nd), and probably a dozen more, plus an awful lot of micro-RPGs! I ran games on the San Francisco Bay Area TTRPG convention circuit for about ten years, and that's given me an awful lot of practice in knowing how to make a game feel alive and fun, without letting players run all over me. When you play one of my games, you can expect a solid plot, challenging (but not mega-lethal) encounters, and lots of chances to roleplay with characters that range from extremely serious and believable to 'Foot-wide talking spider with a pink ribbon tied around her who speaks with a squeaky voice'. I specialize in extremely high fantasy, low fantasy, and horror. All my games are LGBTQ+ friendly and BIPOC inclusive, with a 0 tolerance policy towards behavior violating that. I will kick you out. This is your warning.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created at session 0; A Wanderer's Romance has a very simple character creation system. Most of the time will be spent looking at the PDF to choose your initial martial arts styles. I'll also be going over how to download, set up, and connect to Maptools - It's quite simple to join as a player, and free.

The current party

The first scheduled session is for a Session 0; we'll make characters and determine what drives you, as a martial artist, to strive to change the world!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players, or potential players, should join my Discord server - https://discord.gg/whRDFPyR64 Players should have a mic and a relatively quiet place to play from. Some background noise is OK, but hearing your sibling hooting and hollering at a football game is not! Players should download A Wanderer's Romance from Drive-Thru RPG and give the setting information a read. It's quite short, maybe ten pages, and will help you get into the vibe of the game.

What Travis brings to the table

I will be hosting the Maptools server, making sure we all have a place to play, organizing the games and be prepared to do my best at each session.

How Travis creates a safe table

A Wanderer's Romance is a simple, fast system that is avaliable for free on Drive-Thru RPG. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/92757/A-Wanderers-Romance This campaign will start with a session 0. We will create characters together, since you all, as students of the same master, know one another. We'll also go over the rules for A Wanderer's Romance, which are a very simple 2d6+stats resolution system. We will also go over lines and veils, but with the exception of violence, swearing, and sometimes mild to middling body horror, I usually avoid most R-rated themes. Players should expect to sometimes be placed in difficult situations with no clear 'good' or 'evil' answer.
