Delver's Guide to Beast World | New Player Friendly | Safe Space
About the adventure
This game will start at level one, and is using the fan-made setting book "Delver's Guide to Beast World." Resources will be disseminated to players at the beginning of session zero. We will discuss applicable themes and levels of comfort during session zero, so the story is not set in stone until I've decided what everyone is comfortable with. For a bit of clarity, however, the Delver's Guide to Beast World places some restrictions on character creation, specifically only allowing races from the book, which are entirely anthropomorphized animalistic races except for the book's version of human. As such, it is not compatible with D&D Beyond, as the book is not on that website. I will be enforcing this and other setting-specific rules, which we'll go over in more detail during session zero once everyone has the necessary resources. I have run this setting for different, varied groups, and am excited to continue running it. It's a different take on adventuring, one which doesn't lead to starving the players of gold, and can ultimately lead to greater depths of comradery. The setting naturally lends itself to being rather new-player friendly, and I'm more than willing to lean into that to make it a joyous time for any newcomers we've got at the table.

About me
I'm an eternal DM who thinks every game deserves a fair chance. If you can convince me that a rule needs changing, I'll listen. I believe every group needs safety mechanisms for both the players and their characters. I love running games for a lot of different systems. My current favorites are the good old D&D 5th edition and Fantasy Flight's Star Wars RPG. The former because it's what I started with, and the latter because it's what I love most. The FFG Star Wars system provides so much interactivity and narrative fluidity that I just find it to be eternally appealing. That being said, I have learned ways to implement some of that narrativity into more rigid RPGs like D&D without infringing on what makes the system great. I'm welcome to players of all experience levels with tabletop RPGs of any type, and I will always do my best to make the system more fair for the players than it is for me; it's no fun if the bad guys win, but it's also no fun if things are too easy. I generally do not use sites such as D&D beyond or Roll20, as the majority of my games are played using Theater of the Mind, and those that aren't, I run in person. I trust my players to roll their own dice, and only use dice rollers for games with custom dice, such as FFG Star Wars and Genesys. After all, the best feeling is rolling a natural 20 using your own clickity clack math rocks. I do not tolerate hate speech or offensive character ideas at my tables. Any such ideas that I include in my games as themes for my villains will be discussed with the table beforehand, and will be used exclusively by the villains. I am firmly a part of the LGBTQ+ community, and both of my partners are POC. My tables are safe spaces, and a dedicated part of my session zeroes goes to making sure that all players are comfortable with each other and setting up safety practices so that everyone can feel that the table is a safe space. With all that being said, I hope you enjoy your day, and may all your dice roll well.

Probably the best GM I've ever had, super open to wacky and random character ideas and willing to work with you on homebrew ideas. He also uses some super common - though not base game - mechanics that make the game a lot more immersive. Also a lovely person in general, creates a very safe and inclusive space for anybody who decides to join, and always listens to feedback from the players!
My favorite thing about the game was how considerate the DM was of our experience. They wanted to make sure that we were enjoying our time and whether that meant them changing the way they were used to running games, asking us what we were comfortable with in the game, or helping the new players learn the rules patiently, this DM puts their players first.
very good at setting the scene with ambiance music and never makes anyone feel dumb for asking questions about basic rules or anything of the sort. love the voices he does for different characters and always makes sure everyone is comfortable with group decisions in and out of the game. highly recommend!
Character creation
Creating your character
Character creation will happen during session zero. If you have experience with the game, I recommend figuring out your class, but race will have to wait until session zero when the resources are disseminated.
Every Saturday from 6 pm until about 9 or 10 pm.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Webcam and mic will be required for this game, as well as some sort of character sheet - whether form fillable or paper - to keep track of things. Regular software for character sheets such as D&D Beyond won't work for this game, unless you use custom settings to fill it in. Players are allowed to roll their own dice, or use a dice roller, their preference. I won't be monitoring your rolls. This is an act of trust between me and you; don't fudge your dice, and I won't fudge mine.

How Astrelan creates a safe table
My games are generally combat-heavy, though with smaller groups like the one I'm aiming for here, I like to do a bit more roleplaying.
